St. Francis Health surgeon steers orthopedics ‘Road Show’ to Plainfield


PLAINFIELD, Ind. – You can overcome hip and knee pain and get back to leading an active and rewarding life — and Franciscan St. Francis Health wants to show you how.

Franciscan St. Francis Health will present an arthritis and hip and knee replacement seminar at 6:30 p.m. EDT, Thursday, Oct. 25, at the Primo West, 2353 E. Perry Road, Plainfield. Light refreshments will be served, beginning at 6 p.m.

Board-certified orthopedic surgeon Philip M. Faris, M.D., will explain the latest procedures in joint replacement and arthritis treatments. He specializes in adult reconstructive surgery and joint replacement.

International surgeons to learn from Center for Hip and Knee Surgery experts

MOORESVILLE, Ind. – An international panel of orthopedic surgeons is coming to Franciscan St. Francis Health-Mooresville to observe and discuss advancements made in knee replacement surgery and therapies.

They will be learning the latest techniques in knee replacement surgery from physicians at the Center for Hip and Knee Surgery of the St. Francis Medical Group.

Four international candidates selected for the John N. Insall Travelling Fellowship, sponsored by The Knee Society, will visit the hospital Oct. 18-20. They are:
Matthew S. Austin, M.D., Rothman Institute-Thomas Jefferson Hospital, Philadelphia;
William J. Long, M.D., Insall Scott Kelly Institute for Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, New York City; Roberto Rossi, M.D., University of Torino, Italy; and Rafael J. Sierra, M.D., Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.

“Members of this prestigious group were selected for their surgical skills and research, and we are honored to host them at our Center to learn about the work we perform,” said E. Michael Keating, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon with the Center and a Knee Society board member. “To be one of only 10 centers in the world to host the fellowship is a great honor for us. We hope to share with them many of the latest surgical techniques we have developed at the Center.”

Other Knee Society members at the Mooresville center are Drs. John B. Meding, Philip M. Faris and Michael E. Berend, an Insall Fellow in 2004.

Surgeon opens new practice at St. Francis Orthopedics Specialists

INDIANAPOLIS – Kral Varhan, M.D., a member of St. Francis Medical Group, has joined Orthopedic Specialists at St. Francis Hospital & Health Centers.

He most recently had a practice with Orthopaedic and Arthritis Surgery Center in Grand Island, Neb. Varhan is certified by both the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Varhan also holds subspecialty board certification in orthopedics sports medicine by the American board of Orthopedic Surgery and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

A graduate of Queen University Medical School in Canada, Varhan completed residency at the University of Western Ontario and finished a fellowship in adult reconstruction and arthritis surgery at Stanford University in California.

Varhan specializes in arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine, along with reconstructive surgery and joint replacement.

No pain, great gain at St. Francis Joint & Spine Center free seminars

BEECH GROVE, Ind. – The human body speaks loud and clear when something isn’t quite right: Pain.

That’s why the St. Francis Joint & Spine Center offers free monthly Hip & Knee Education seminars for people who are interested in learning about treatment options for painful joints. All seminars are located at the St. Francis Joint & Spine Center, 2nd Floor, St. Francis Hospital-Beech Grove, 1600 Albany St., Beech Grove.

Topics include pain relief, signs and symptoms of joint problems, normal and abnormal anatomy, treatment options and new technology.

Upcoming seminars are scheduled for 6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 27; 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 29; and 6 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 19.

Orthopaedic surgeon establishes new practice at St. Francis

INDIANAPOLIS – Michael E. Ralston, M.D., a member of St. Francis Medical Group, has joined Orthopaedic Restoration at St. Francis Hospital & Health Centers.

Ralston is an honors undergraduate of The Ohio State University, where he also earned his medical degree. He completed a surgical internship and residency training at the University of Florida, and later completed a fellowship in total joint replacement at The Ohio State University.

Ralston is a Diplomat of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery.

St. Francis Hospital-Mooresville marks hospital’s largest expansion with a blessing, dedication and ribbon-cutting

What: Before St. Francis Hospital-Mooresville officially opens its doors to the largest-ever expansion of the hospital campus, it will host a blessing, dedication and ribbon-cutting event for invited guests.

As part of the $42 million expansion, the hospital adds a 34-bed orthopaedic inpatient unit, a 26-bed adult medical-surgical inpatient unit, an eight-bed Intensive Care Unit, six new operating rooms, a new laboratory and an on-site office for Indiana Heart Physicians for expanded cardiac services, all opening to patients April 21. The hospital’s now larger main lobby gallery also offers a new coffee bar and gift shop. In total, the hospital has grown from 258,000 square feet to nearly 400,000 square feet during this expansion.

Medical chief selected for Orthopedics and Joint Center Services


INDIANAPOLIS – Timothy J. Williams, M.D., J.D., has been appointed medical director for Orthopedics and Joint Center Services for St. Francis Hospital & Health Centers.
Williams practices at the Center for Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine and specializes in hip and knee replacement surgery as well as the treatment of arthritis.
He earned his medical degree at The Ohio State University where he also completed his residency in orthopedic surgery.
He received fellowship training in adult reconstruction and biologic arthroplasty at Harvard's Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He also is a graduate of Capital University Law School in Columbus, Ohio.
"I am very excited to be a part of the St. Francis health-care team," said Williams. "This is a great opportunity to contribute to the already excellent orthopedic care provided by St. Francis."
Williams is a frequent lecturer on orthopedic care and has co-authored a book chapter on knee replacement.

Ortho surgeon tapped to lead Mooresville hospital medical staff


MOORESVILLE, Ind. – John B. Meding, M.D., has been elected president of the St. Francis Hospital-Mooresville medical staff for a two-year term.

The new president is a surgeon with Joint Replacement Surgeons of Indiana, a practice group affiliated with the Center for Hip & Knee Surgery at the Mooresville hospital. Meding’s specialty is adult reconstructive surgery with specialty interests in sports medicine, shoulder disorders and joint replacement.

A graduate of Indiana University School of Medicine, Meding completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Cincinnati. He is board certified in orthopaedic surgery and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Association of Hip & Knee Surgeons, Orthopaedic Research Society and the American College of Sports Medicine.

Meding has co-authored research articles for nationally and internationally published medical journals such as Clinical Orthopaedics, Journal of Arthroplasty and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. He also has made a number of national professional presentations.

Meding comes to his position as the Mooresville hospital nears completion of a $42 million expansion. The project is expected to be completed in mid-April and includes more private patient rooms, new surgery suites, an intensive care unit and expanded laboratory services.

The Mooresville hospital also will offer a new emergency department and a new medical office building for the Center for Hip & Knee Surgery, scheduled for opening in July.
