Surgeon opens new practice at St. Francis Orthopedics Specialists

INDIANAPOLIS – Kral Varhan, M.D., a member of St. Francis Medical Group, has joined Orthopedic Specialists at St. Francis Hospital & Health Centers.

He most recently had a practice with Orthopaedic and Arthritis Surgery Center in Grand Island, Neb. Varhan is certified by both the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Varhan also holds subspecialty board certification in orthopedics sports medicine by the American board of Orthopedic Surgery and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

A graduate of Queen University Medical School in Canada, Varhan completed residency at the University of Western Ontario and finished a fellowship in adult reconstruction and arthritis surgery at Stanford University in California.

Varhan specializes in arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine, along with reconstructive surgery and joint replacement.

St. Francis’ South 31 Family Care opens doors for public visit

INDIANAPOLIS – The doors at South 31 Family Care will be open to the public , 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 27, at its new south side location.

Tours and refreshments will be offered at the newly opened center, located U.S. 31 and Southport Road.

Physicians on staff also will be on hand to meet with guests. The four physicians, all of whom are members of St. Francis Medical Group are: Matthew Wolf, M.D., Joe Johnston, M.D.; Lisa Altuglu, M.D.; and John Baldea, M.D.

St. Francis family medicine veterans move practice location

INDIANAPOLIS – Two St. Francis Medical Group physicians are relocating their family medicine practices to a new location in early August.

Matt Wolf, M.D., and Joe Johnston, M.D., will see patients at the newly opened South 31 Family Care center, located at U.S. 31 and Southport Road. They previously practiced at St. Francis Center Grove Family Medicine.

They will be joined by Lisa Altuglu, M.D., and John Baldea, M.D., at the new location.

Wolf and Johnston are board-certified in family medicine and also provide obstetrical care and delivering babies at St. Francis Hospital-Indianapolis.

Both physicians completed their residencies at St. Francis and were graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine.

Physician poised to see new patients at South 31 Family Care

INDIANAPOLIS – John D. Baldea, M.D., a member of St. Francis Medical Group, will establish a practice at South 31 Family Care effective Aug. 3.

Baldea, who specializes in family and sports medicine, comes to the new position from Colorado, where he served as team physician at the University of Colorado and University of Denver. Previously, he was employed by U.S. Healthworks Urgent Care Center and Southway Urgent Care Center in Colorado.

A graduate of the Indiana University School of Medicine, Baldea completed family residency training at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie and a sports medicine fellowship at the University of Colorado.

He holds memberships in the American Medical Association, American Academy of Family Physicians, American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, American College of Sports Medicine and the Indiana Academy of Family Physicians.

Baldea joins Matthew Wolf, M.D., W. Joseph Johnston, M.D., and Lisa Altuglu, M.D., at the newly opened Southport Family Care center, located U.S. 31 and Southport Road. Wolf and Johnston previously were associated with St. Francis’ Center Grove Family Medicine.

Medical chief selected for Orthopedics and Joint Center Services

INDIANAPOLIS – Timothy J. Williams, M.D., J.D., has been appointed medical director for Orthopedics and Joint Center Services for St. Francis Hospital & Health Centers.

Williams practices at the Center for Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine and specializes in hip and knee replacement surgery as well as the treatment of arthritis.

He earned his medical degree at The Ohio State University where he also completed his residency in orthopedic surgery.

He received fellowship training in adult reconstruction and biologic arthroplasty at Harvard's Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He also is a graduate of Capital University Law School in Columbus, Ohio.

"I am very excited to be a part of the St. Francis health-care team," said Williams. "This is a great opportunity to contribute to the already excellent orthopedic care provided by St. Francis."

Williams is a frequent lecturer on orthopedic care and has co-authored a book chapter on knee replacement.

Athletes’ Feat: Mini-Marathon training under way at St. Francis

INDIANAPOLIS – Participants wanting to get a foot up on Indianapolis’ annual Mini Marathon can do so at a Jan. 26 event sponsored by St. Francis Hospital & Health Centers and Ken Long & Associates (KLA).

A free kick-off clinic and a training run and walk will be held Saturday, Jan. 26 at St. Francis Hospital-Indianapolis, 8111 S. Emerson Ave. The clinic will be held in the hospital’s main entrance and cafeteria.

The event gets under way at 8 a.m. with a sign-in and welcome. It will be followed by a nutrition workshop for runners and walkers presented by St. Francis exercise physiologist Kim Modglin.

Staff from St. Francis Sports Medicine, and experts KLA from Athletic Annex, Gray Goat Sports, The Runners Forum and The Running Company will discuss:

What’s your foot type?
How your feet contribute to injuries during training
Orthotics – What they really do, the difference between custom-made and over-the-counter and who really needs orthotics
What is the “correct” shoe for you?
What’s new in 2008

Following the workshops, the prospective Mini Marathon participants will take to the streets for a “Run & Walk,” from 30 minutes up to 4 miles.
