Decade of deliveries reaches maternity milestone at St. Francis- Mooresville

MOORESVILLE, Ind. – St. Francis Hospital-Mooresville has more than 4,500 reasons to be proud of its track record the last 10 years.

That’s how many babies have been delivered since the birth of its Cherished Beginnings unit in January 2000.

The first child born at Cherished Beginnings – a boy – came into the world at 4:31 p.m., Jan. 4, 2000, and was delivered by James Perry, M.D., who continues his obstetrics practice and now serves as president of the St. Francis-Mooresville medical staff. The most recent birth was January 5, 2010, at 12:36 p.m., also delivered by Perry.

So many young lives and families in Morgan County have gotten their start in Cherished Beginnings, and we are proud to continue to be a part of it all,” said Dawn Scott, R.N., clinical services director who was the first manager of Cherished Beginnings.

Among the original 17 staff members – the number of which has since doubled – is Stephanie Brock, R.N., the current manager of the OB.

In the decade Cherished Beginnings has operated, 53 sets of twins have been delivered. The largest baby, a boy, was born in March 2004 and tipped the scales at 11 pounds.

The unit provides a wide range of obstetrical services and newborn care to women and their babies, including a level 2 nursery to care for low- and moderate-risk newborns, with immediate access to the level 3 neonatal intensive care unit at St. Francis Hospital-Indianapolis if needed. The Mooresville unit also has surgical suites for Caesarean sections and other emergencies.

Cherished Beginnings provides far more than labor and delivery. A variety of prenatal, newborn care and parenting classes are offered throughout the year. The unit also offers child passenger safety seat inspections and a variety of support groups.

St. Francis Hospital-Mooresville opens Emergency Department Oct. 1

Hospital meets a critical need for residents in Mooresville and the surrounding areas

MOORESVILLE, Ind. – Whether it’s a sick child in the middle of the night, a serious sports injury or a sudden severe health issue, it’s important that high-quality emergency care is available nearby.

For residents in Mooresville and the surrounding areas, that service is now offered at the St. Francis Hospital – Mooresville Emergency Department, open Wednesday, at 8 a.m. Oct. 1.

The new Emergency Department is located near the campus’ main entrance at 1201 Hadley Road, adjacent to the hospital’s PromptMed urgent care facility, which treats about 20,000 patients a year.

The Emergency Department is staffed by 22 board-certified emergency physicians from Emergency Physicians of Indianapolis, several specialty physicians, three in-house hospitalists who facilitate patient admissions, and nurses trained in acute care and trauma situations. The new department features state-of-the-art equipment and includes 14 treatment rooms, two acute care rooms and a community room for emergency medical services professionals.

Emergency Department physicians and medical staff have access to wireless communication technology and bedside charting for improved caregiver communication and efficiency. The department is conveniently located near Radiology Services and the Intensive Care Unit.

The new Emergency Department also is an access point for St. Francis’ renowned Emergency Heart Attack Response Team (EHART) approach to cardiac care. The more quickly a patient showing signs of a heart attack is admitted into the hospital’s cardiac catheterization lab for treatment, the better the chances are for survival. EHART dramatically improves the hospital’s door-to- intervention time, which can mean a significant improvement in heart attack outcomes.

The opening of the Emergency Department is perhaps the community’s most highly anticipated element of the hospital’s recent $42 million expansion. In April of this year, the hospital opened:

• A new 34-bed orthopaedic inpatient unit;
• A 26-bed adult medical-surgical inpatient unit;
• An eight-bed Intensive Care Unit;
• Six new operating rooms with the latest in surgical technology, including a high-tech video and photography system in every operating room and laminar airflow and ultraviolet light technology for sterilization, which is critical in preventing infection;
• A new laboratory;
• An on-site office for Indiana Heart Physicians for expanded cardiac services; and
• An expanded main lobby gallery, which offers a coffee bar and gift shop.

With the expansion, the hospital grew from 258,000 square feet to nearly 400,000 square feet.

“The opening of the Emergency Department, which completes our recent major expansion, is the continuation of an eight-year investment in this hospital to address the health care needs of the growing northern Morgan, Hendricks and southwestern Marion counties,” said Robert J. Brody, president and chief executive officer, St. Francis Hospital & Health Centers. “It is our goal and mission to offer the best health care available right in this community, so the large number of area residents who have been leaving Morgan County to receive medical services get the care they need close to home.”

The Emergency Department is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. PromptMed hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Daniel DeSalle appointed hospitalist at St. Francis-Mooresville

MOORESVILLE, Ind. – Daniel J. DeSalle, D.O., a member of St. Francis Medical Group, has joined the IMPACT Center at St. Francis Hospital-Mooresville.

He becomes part of a physician team of hospitalists who provide perioperative consultation assessments at the Mooresville facility. A hospitalist is a medical specialist who provides quality medical treatment to individuals while they are in the hospital.

DeSalle most recently worked as a hospitalist a Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, Pa., where he earlier completed a residency in internal medicine and internship in osteopathic medicine.

A graduate of the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Mo., DeSalle earned an undergraduate degree in psychology at Indiana University in Bloomington. He also has worked as an emergency room technician at Bloomington Hospital, an event planner and coordinator and an associate stock broker.

Surgeons on deck to see patients at St. Francis Hospital-Mooresville

MOORESVILLE, Ind. – Indy Southside Surgical will soon move into a new office suite at St. Francis Hospital-Mooresville.

The office will be opened Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will serve as the primary office for Mark Edwards, M.D.; David Mandelbaum, M.D.; and Mathew Libke, M.D., will see patients there part-time. They will be located in the Professional Center at the hospital, 1203 Hadley Rd., Mooresville.

The general surgeons perform digestive tract, colon and rectum, breast and gall bladder procedures. Also, they remove skin and subcutaneous lesions and repair all types of hernias. Many of the procedures are minimally invasive, using laparoscopic techniques.

Plans call for the surgeons to begin seeing patients in Mooresville in late February.

The new surgical practice comes at a time as the Mooresville hospital nears completion of a $42 million expansion. The project is expected to be completed in mid-April and includes more private patient rooms, new surgery suites, an intensive care unit and expanded laboratory services.

The Mooresville hospital also will offer a new emergency department and a new medical office building for the Center for Hip & Knee Surgery, scheduled for opening in the second half of 2008.

Indy Southside Surgical also maintains an office on the St. Francis Hospital-Indianapolis campus at 5255 E. Stop 11 Rd., Suite 450.

RN selected to manage obstetrics at St. Francis Hospital-Mooresville

MOORESVILLE, Ind. – Stephanie D. Brock, R.N., has been appointed manager of the obstetrics unit at St. Francis Hospital-Mooresville.

Prior to her appointment, Brock worked in the same unit as a charge nurse, managing patient care in all stages of labor, delivery and postpartum. She has been trained in neonatal care and served as a prenatal educator and preceptor and mentor to new hospital employees.

Brock worked as a nurse at St. Francis Hospital-Beech Grove from 1995 until 1999 before transferring to the Mooresville medical facility. She previously worked at Grandview Convalescent Center in Martinsville.

A resident or Martinsville, Brock received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Indiana Wesleyan University, graduating with honors.

Brock holds several nurse and medical certifications and is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, an honor society of nursing.

Colorectal surgeon honored with prestigious fellowship

INDIANAPOLIS – Bridget Sanders, M.D., has been named a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS).

Sanders practices with the Kendrick Regional Center for Colon and Rectal Care on the campuses of the St. Francis Mooresville and Indianapolis hospitals. She specializes in the treatment of pelvic floor disorders, as well as laparoscopic colon and rectal surgery.

A 1998 graduate of the Indiana University School of Medicine, Sanders completed her general surgery residency at IU and finished her fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Florida.

Sanders attained board certification from the American Board of Surgery and was board-certified in colon and rectal surgery in 2006.

She is a member of the ACS, American Women Surgical Association, American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the Indiana State Medical Association, Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation and SAGES.

Sanders was named a Fellow during the ACS’s 93rd annual Clinical Congress, held recently in New Orleans.

The American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational organization of surgeons that was founded in 1913 to raise the standards of surgical practice and to improve the care of the surgical patient. The organization has more than 72,000 members and is the largest organization of surgeons in the world.

Physician establishes practice St. Francis Hospital-Mooresville

MOORESVILLE, Ind. – William A. Kcomt, M.D., has joined the medical staff at St. Francis Hospital-Mooresville.

He comes to St. Francis from Elk Regional Health System in St. Mary’s, Pa. He also was affiliated with the Guthrie Clinic, Robert Parker Hospital, Upper Allegheny Medical Center and Charles Cole Memorial Hospital, all in Pennsylvania.

A native of Lima, Peru, Kcomt earned his medical degree at the Universidad Nacional Mayor De San Marcos and completed his internal medicine residency at St. Barnabas Hospital in New York. He completed a fellowship in the Rheumatology Division at the Indiana University School of Medicine in 2004.

Kcomt’s office is in the Rheumatology Center, Family Medical Pavilion at St. Francis Hospital-Mooresville, Suite 160, 1001 Hadley Rd.

His practice focuses on the specialized management of neck pain and low back pain; diagnosis and treatment of fibromyalgia; comprehensive management of shoulder pain; diagnosis and management of osteoporosis and prevention of fractures; and diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory muscle and joint conditions.

Ortho surgeon tapped to lead Mooresville hospital medical staff

MOORESVILLE, Ind. – John B. Meding, M.D., has been elected president of the St. Francis Hospital-Mooresville medical staff for a two-year term.

The new president is a surgeon with Joint Replacement Surgeons of Indiana, a practice group affiliated with the Center for Hip & Knee Surgery at the Mooresville hospital. Meding’s specialty is adult reconstructive surgery with specialty interests in sports medicine, shoulder disorders and joint replacement.

A graduate of Indiana University School of Medicine, Meding completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Cincinnati. He is board certified in orthopaedic surgery and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Association of Hip & Knee Surgeons, Orthopaedic Research Society and the American College of Sports Medicine.

Meding has co-authored research articles for nationally and internationally published medical journals such as Clinical Orthopaedics, Journal of Arthroplasty and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. He also has made a number of national professional presentations.
