INDIANAPOLIS – Thomas Webb III, MD, has been named co-medical director of Vascular Services at Franciscan St. Francis Health.
Dr. Webb comes to Franciscan St. Francis Health and Cardiac Surgery Associates (CSA), from Omaha, Neb., where he was Director of Vascular Surgery for Catholic Health Initiatives at Bergan Mercy Hospital.
 As a nationally renowned vascular surgeon, Dr. Webb has performed more than 20,000 complex vascular surgeries during his career and has expertise in minimally invasive vascular and endovascular surgery.

“Dr. Webb has forged an outstanding career in advanced vascular surgery and intervention. He is a leader in innovative treatment of complex vascular disease combining depth of experience in major surgical procedures with the full spectrum of minimally invasive techniques,” said Marc Gerdisch, MD, chief of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at Franciscan St. Francis Heart Center. “With Dr. Webb’s arrival, in combination with our already outstanding team of surgeons, interventional cardiologists, interventional radiologists and wound care specialists, we expand to a level of care rarely accomplished.”

Dr. Webb has received numerous awards and honors as a leader and innovator in vascular surgery. He has been named among 100 Best Doctors in America® and was first in Omaha to develop a protocol for complex dialysis access salvage to streamline care. In addition, he was first in Omaha to use aortic endografts during surgery and introduced the use of endoscopic vein harvesting. 

He is joining one of the nation’s premier cardiovascular programs. Franciscan St. Francis Health is Indianapolis’ only Five-star rated hospital for peripheral vascular surgery and is ranked Top 2% in the nation for overall heart care by Healthgrades.

Dr. Webb earned his medical degree from Medical College of Virginia in 1984 and completed his residency training in general surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and his fellowship in vascular surgery at the University of Chicago.

He conducts presentations nationally on minimally invasive vascular and endovascular surgery and participates in landmark research. Dr. Webb has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Vascular Surgery, and serves as a reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals.

Cardiologist lauded for clinical excellence, compassionate patient care

INDIANAPOLIS – William J. Berg, MD, has been honored with Franciscan St. Francis Health’s Healing Hands Award on March 11.

A member of Indiana Heart Physicians, a Franciscan Physician Network practice, Dr. Berg has been affiliated with the hospital since 1990. In addition to his role as an interventional cardiologist, he also serves as medical director of the hospital’s Heart Center and Catheterization Lab.

“His impact on everyone he touches – grateful patients, appreciative families, staff and colleagues – is quite evident,” said David M. Mandelbaum, MD, director of Medical Staff Engagement. “Dr. Berg’s patients talk about his knowledge and skills and also of his patience in explaining their situations, procedures and answering all of their questions. He truly wants them to understand and be comfortable with what is happening and takes the time to ensure that patients and families are informed and prepared.”

Dr. Berg was presented the award at a March 11 ceremony and luncheon at Franciscan St. Francis Health-Indianapolis.

“I am truly appreciative of this award,” Dr. Berg said. “I am fortunate to have a wonderful family at Indiana Heart Physicians, who have supported me and made my job enjoyable for the last 25 years.”

Dr. Berg received his undergraduate degree from DePaul University (Chicago) and earned his medical degree at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He completed a residency and fellowship in cardiology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Awarded three times annually, the Healing Hands Award recognizes Franciscan St. Francis physicians for excellence in clinical skills, patient relations, research, stewardship and reflection of the hospital’s care ministry, values and mission.
