Cardiologist lauded for clinical excellence, compassionate patient care

INDIANAPOLIS – William J. Berg, MD, has been honored with Franciscan St. Francis Health’s Healing Hands Award on March 11.

A member of Indiana Heart Physicians, a Franciscan Physician Network practice, Dr. Berg has been affiliated with the hospital since 1990. In addition to his role as an interventional cardiologist, he also serves as medical director of the hospital’s Heart Center and Catheterization Lab.

“His impact on everyone he touches – grateful patients, appreciative families, staff and colleagues – is quite evident,” said David M. Mandelbaum, MD, director of Medical Staff Engagement. “Dr. Berg’s patients talk about his knowledge and skills and also of his patience in explaining their situations, procedures and answering all of their questions. He truly wants them to understand and be comfortable with what is happening and takes the time to ensure that patients and families are informed and prepared.”

Dr. Berg was presented the award at a March 11 ceremony and luncheon at Franciscan St. Francis Health-Indianapolis.

“I am truly appreciative of this award,” Dr. Berg said. “I am fortunate to have a wonderful family at Indiana Heart Physicians, who have supported me and made my job enjoyable for the last 25 years.”

Dr. Berg received his undergraduate degree from DePaul University (Chicago) and earned his medical degree at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He completed a residency and fellowship in cardiology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Awarded three times annually, the Healing Hands Award recognizes Franciscan St. Francis physicians for excellence in clinical skills, patient relations, research, stewardship and reflection of the hospital’s care ministry, values and mission.
