One in five
Americans will develop skin cancer in their
lifetimes. But early detection and treatment is successful for most diagnosed
with skin cancer. Caught early, the five-year survival rate for melanoma is 98 percent.
Beginning at age
20, the American Cancer Society recommends a skin cancer-related checkup as
part of routine health examinations for men and women. Those considered to be
at high risk of skin cancer are:
Have light hair, light eye color and fair skin
Have used tanning beds
Have a family history of melanoma
Had sunburns at a young age
Have more than 50 moles
Have had a previous skin cancer or melanoma
diagnosis
INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – Want to know some obscure fact or gain some
insight about the drivers who have turned laps at the storied Indianapolis Motor Speedway? Just ask Donald
Davidson and he’ll assemble an answer faster than the best pit crew.
Davidson, Speedway historian and member of the Auto Racing Hall of Fame,
will share his experiences as the featured speaker at this year’s Senior
Promise Christmas Party, slated for Friday, Dec. 9 at Primo Banquet Hall
and Conference Center.
The British-born Davidsonspent his youth
immersed in studying the history of the Indy 500. Upon his first visit to the
track in 1964, he amazed race fans with his ability to recite the record of
every driver who had ever competed at the 2.5-mile track. The following year,
he moved to Indianapolis and became a race statistician.
The affable auto aficionado later would become the Speedway’s first
full-time historian, a position he has held for more than three decades. He
also is the longest-serving commentator on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway
Radio Network staff.
“Our annual celebration honors the birth of Christ and celebrates the
holiday season,” said Mindy King, director of Franciscan Insurance Services, a
component of the Franciscan Health-based Senior Promise. “We’re proud to have
Mr. Davidson join us this year and share his passion for the Indy 500 and take
questions from the audience.”
The annual party also includes a plated lunch to participants and the
opportunity to win prizes. Proceeds will benefit the Franciscan Health Food
Pantry.

PLAINFIELD,
Indiana – Laura E. Counsell, MD, has established a practice with Franciscan
Physician Network Plainfield Family Medicine.
She joins Cindy DeNeira, DO, and advanced practice providers
who provide convenient care for infants through seniors in Hendricks County and
surrounding areas.
Dr. Counsell
recently completed a family medicine residency at St. Vincent Health, where she
also served as chief resident and was active in various hospital activities. She
received an undergraduate degree in zoology with honors from Miami University
of Ohio and earned her medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College
of Medicine.

Robert J. Brody recognized for commitment, contributions to healthcare
excellence
INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – Robert J. Brody has forged a long career focused
on discovering innovative ways to deliver stellar and accessible healthcare to
patients and to build enduring relationships with the many communities served
by Franciscan Alliance. He possesses a quiet but steady style of leadership which
might well be described in three words, says one of his long-time associates: A servant’s heart.
Such qualities are among the many reasons why Brody – senior vice
president and chief operating officer for Franciscan
Alliance – was selected by the Indiana Hospital Association (IHA) for the 2016 Distinguished Service Award.
The award is presented annually to an Indiana hospital CEO who has made
outstanding contributions to their organization, its patients, the community
and the overall healthcare profession.
With hundreds of hospital leaders from throughout the state and his
proud colleagues and family looking on, Brody was presented with the award Oct.
6 at the IHA’s annual membership meeting in Downtown Indianapolis.
Brody, who served as president and CEO of Franciscan Health’s hospitals
in Indianapolis, Mooresville and Carmel from 1996 to 2015, has been at the forefront
on many progressive and sometimes thorny issues in the ever-changing arena of
healthcare industry.
Brody, who was unaware he had been selected for the Distinguished
Service Award, only shook his head and smiled when it was revealed in a special video screened at the
IHA meeting. And with characteristic modesty, he gave full credit to the many
who have impacted his career. Here’s what some of his colleagues and friends

During his time at the helm as CEO, Brody
spearheaded countless expansion and quality initiatives making Franciscan
Alliance’s Central Indiana Region one of the elite
healthcare providers in Indiana and the nation. He expanded the system
from a single acute care hospital to three institutions.
He directed a $300 million expansion and
renovation that included the consolidation of Beech Grove inpatient services to
the expanded Indianapolis campus in 2012. He also oversaw the creation of
Franciscan St. Francis Heart Center and expanded cancer and women services.
Brody also engineered the merger of Mooresville’s Kendrick Hospital
into Franciscan Alliance and built a short-stay hospital in Carmel.
He worked to establish Franciscan Hospice House, a free-standing center on the
Indianapolis hospital campus.
In his current role, Brody is responsible
for all of Franciscan Alliance’s free-standing ambulatory services and
directing the Franciscan Physician Network, which includes more than 750
physicians and nurse practitioners in Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. Before
his career at Franciscan Alliance, Brody served in a variety of administrative
leadership roles at hospitals in New Jersey, Louisiana, Texas and North
Carolina.
A Fellow of the American College of
Healthcare Executives, Brody is a board member of Franciscan Alliance
Foundation Franciscan Health, Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, Indiana Health
Information Exchange, Indy 500 Festival and The Sycamore School of Indianapolis.
He is a previous member of the Indianapolis-Catholic Community Foundation, Lay
Board of Advisors for the Sisters of St. Benedict, Make-A-Wish Foundation of
Indiana, Indianapolis Coalition for Patient Safety, Indianapolis-Marion County
Public Library Foundation and the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.
Brody received his undergraduate degree from
Boston College and earned a master’s degree in health administration from Duke
University. He completed an administrative residency at Ochsner Clinic in New
Orleans.

residents and have three children.
Hospital is one of only 36 recognized nationally by American College of
Cardiology
INDIANAPOLIS,
Indiana – Franciscan Health Indianapolis has received the American College of
Cardiology’s NCDR ACTION Registry–Get with the Guidelines (GWTG) Gold
Performance Achievement Award for 2016 and is among only 36 hospitals
nationwide to receive the honor.
The award
recognizes Franciscan
Health’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for
heart attack patients and signifies the hospital has reached an aggressive goal
of treating these patients to standard levels of care as outlined by the American College
of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations.
To receive the ACTION Registry–GWTG
Gold Performance Achievement Award, Franciscan Health consistently followed
the treatment guidelines in the ACTION Registry–GWTG for eight consecutive
quarters and has performed at
the top level of standards for specific performance measures.

our outstanding team of physicians, nurses, and clinical staff is to always
provide superior care for our patients,” said Saeed Shaikh, MD, FACC, FSCAI, interventional cardiologist
with the hospital’s Heart Center and managing director of Franciscan Physician Network Indiana Heart Physicians. “Patients can take comfort
knowing that they have access to the highest quality heart care in Indiana and
the nation.”
The Centers for Disease Control estimates that more
than 700,000 Americans suffer a heart attack each year. A
heart attack occurs when a blood clot in a coronary artery partially or
completely blocks blood flow to the heart muscle.
Treatment
guidelines include administering aspirin upon arrival and discharge, timely
restoration of blood flow to the blocked artery, smoking cessation counseling
and cardiac rehabilitation, among others.
More recently, Franciscan
Health received the Mission: Lifeline®Gold-Plus Award for surpassing quality
measures in the treatment of patients who suffer severe heart attacks.
