Franciscan Health Weight Loss Center Earns National Reaccreditation

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – Patients seeking surgical treatment for severe obesity and its related conditions have a high-quality choice for receiving treatment from a nationally accredited program that meets the highest standards for patient safety and quality of care in the greater Indianapolis area.

They can receive care from Franciscan Health Weight Loss Center, which was recently reaccredited as a Comprehensive Center under the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). This is a joint accreditation program of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

The MBSAQIP Standards ensure bariatric surgical patients receive a multidisciplinary program, not just a surgical procedure, which improves patient outcomes and long-term success. The accredited center offers preoperative and postoperative care designed specifically for their severely obese patients.

Led by Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Directors Jonathan Mandelbaum, MD, and Hazem Shamseddeen, MD, Franciscan Health Weight Loss Center is committed to continuous improvement to bolster the structure, process and outcomes for patients.

To earn the MBSAQIP designation, Franciscan Health Weight Loss Center met essential criteria for staffing, training and facility infrastructure and protocols for care, ensuring its ability to support patients with severe obesity. The center also participates in a national data registry that yields semiannual reports on the quality of its processes and outcomes, identifying opportunities for continuous quality improvement.

An estimated 15.5 million Americans suffer from severe obesity, according to the National Institutes of Health, and the numbers continue to increase. Obesity increases the risks of morbidity and mortality because of the diseases and conditions commonly associated with it, such as type II diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease, among other health risks.

Metabolic and bariatric surgical procedures have proven to be effective in the reduction of chronic conditions related to severe obesity.

Support Program Helps Children, Teens Handle Grief in Loss of Loved Ones

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana  – Consider the caterpillar: It builds a cocoon and remains safely ensconced until it transforms and emerges into a new life, one that takes flight.

Death is a part of the life cycle, and it’s especially difficult for children to grasp and make sense out of it, particularly when they lose a loved one. And that’s why Franciscan VNS St. Francis Hospice offers Caterpillar Kids, a support program that offers learning experiences for children ages 5 to 12.

Additionally, Teen Grief Support Group is offered to those from 13 to 18 years of age.

The dates for both programs from Sept. 14, Sept. 21, Sept. 28 and Oct. 5. The workshops, which are free, are from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Meetings are at Christ United Methodist Church, 8540 U.S. 31 South, one mile north of Greenwood Park Mall.

“Children do grieve and they may express it differently than adults, but their feelings are as genuine and essential in healing,” said Karla Riggs Norton, spiritual bereavement coordinator. “Caterpillar Kids brings children together in a safe, nurturing environment where they receive information about grief and learn healthy ways to cope with the death of a loved one.”

Led by staff trained in bereavement support for children, youngsters participate in storytelling, art projects, games and other sharing opportunities. Parents also are invited to participate in a concurrent session to assist them in supporting their children.

Registration is required. To register or for more information about Caterpillar Kids, call Karla Riggs Norton at 317-528-2636, or Jeff Hauersperger at 317 528-2099.
